Hello, my name is Ken and Ronan has just installed a greenhouse for me and I am delighted! When we moved recently to a new house we realised we had a great opportunity to put a greenhouse in before we planted flower beds or trees and used up all the space.

We decided on an eight foot by six foot aluminium framed greenhouse with reinforced glass. My wife Terry and I had previously built an aluminium framed cheap greenhouse with polythene sheeting over the frame. We thought we could install the new greenhouse ourselves, but we had never done a glass greenhouse installation on our own, and hadn’t appreciated the complexity of building one.

Before you can start the installation of your greenhouse you have to prepare the base.

Preparing the base for our greenhouse

When the packs arrived, we realised that we may have bitten off more than we could chew. The instructions were more complex than we remembered, and having glass rather than plastic meant that we could not be as careless with the base as we had been before. Stress on the frame means that there is a danger of glass shattering if there is more than 3 millimetres or so difference along the length of the base. With the reinforced glass the results are apparently less dangerous than with the older type of horticultural glass. Reinforced glass breaks into tiny squares, the same way car windscreens used to, but the horticultural glass splinters.

So having scared ourselves we decided to find out if anyone could install the glasshouse for us – asking at the garden centre we had ordered the greenhouse through, we were fortunate to bump into Ronan fixing up a greenhouse in the display area. A short chat later and we had arranged for Ronan to come out and give us a quote for supplying and laying the base for the glasshouse, assembling the greenhouse and laying a patio.

I am attaching a few photos taken during the installation process; needless to say we are delighted with the results and looking forward to growing tomatoes and salads during the rest of the year.
